In memory of WILLm ALLEN FLOWERDEW writer Dundee who died 21st January 1853 aged 58 years and of his wife MARGARET GRAY who died 9th February 1836 aged 39 years also of their eldest daughter ELIZABETH who died at Munich 20th March 1863 and of their youngest son JAMES GRAY who died at Portland Oregan 20th July 1872 this stone is raised as a tribute of affection by their surviving children also WILLIAM FLOWERDEW eldest of the above who died at SUD EST SEYCHELLES march 23rd 1891 aged 59 Dundee 29 March 1860, permission granted to the family of the late William Allan Flowerdew, writer, on payment of £5.5/- to erect a monument on a small space of ground immediately to the eastward of the late Bailie James Gray, in terms of minute of a committee of the Town Council of 31 Oct 1859. The base of the monument not to exceed five feet of Eastward from the said Bailie Gray's burying ground, nor be more than five feet from North to South.
